City-funded organization

Teacher's Choice is not an independent organization but a New York City Department of Education program, created by the DOE and the United Federation of Teachers in 1986, that reimburses classroom teachers, and more recently paraprofessionals, for supplemental instructional supplies bought out of pocket (uft.org). City Council discretionary (member item) funding records show $39 million allocated to it through DOE across four fiscal years: $13 million in FY2009, $13 million in FY2010, $9.25 million in FY2011, and $3.75 million in FY2013; Checkbook NYC's record shows no further discretionary allocations to it after FY2013.
